Who is this ligature for?
This model is designed exclusively for German system clarinet mouthpieces and is not compatible with Boehm system mouthpieces. If you play on a German, or Oehler, system clarinet – common across German and Austrian orchestras and music schools – it is engineered to match that mouthpiece geometry precisely: it fits without modification and sits evenly against the mouthpiece. For background, see the Wikipedia article on the Oehler system.
Reed compatibility
Designed for standard B♭ clarinet reeds used with the German system, regardless of strength or brand. Because pressure is distributed evenly across the whole reed, tone stays consistent even when switching between softer and harder reed strengths, without needing to readjust the ligature.
Fitting & care
First align the reed roughly using the crosshair marking, then close the spindle hand-tight. Fine-tune the position afterward, then tighten evenly – this keeps tension identical on both sides. Avoid over-tightening, as excessive pressure can restrict the reed’s ability to vibrate freely. Store the ligature dry after playing and check the threaded spindle periodically for wear; the included cap protects reed and mouthpiece during transport.
Frequently asked questions
Does this ligature fit Boehm system mouthpieces?
No, this model is designed exclusively for the German system.
Is a mouthpiece cap included?
Yes, the matching cap is included and protects the reed and mouthpiece during transport.
What material is the ligature made from?
A durable fabric material that provides even, gentle contact against the reed.
How often should the ligature be maintained?
A quick visual check of the threaded spindle before each use is enough to catch wear early.
Why choose a Gleichweit ligature?
Gleichweit makes accessories for clarinetists who need to rely on their instrument, from the practice room to the concert stage. Every ligature is visually inspected before shipping – spindle, seam and crosshair print – and checked for even pressure, for noticeably consistent tone from reed to reed.
